EPA and DHA are important substances for all tissues of the body, which allow regulating many functions. They help to control inflammatory reactions, blood coagulation, and "launching" of certain genes. DHA is found in almost all cells of the body, but the largest amount is concentrated in the cells of the heart, brain and retina. EPA is useful for maintaining the health of blood vessels and preventing atherosclerosis.
Eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids are the most valuable omega-3 fatty acids found only in fish oil and some types of seaweed. These polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids are not found in any other vegetable oil. Other vegetable oils contain other types of omega-3 PUFAs, namely alpha-linolenic acid, but none of them contain EPA and DHA. These are precisely those fatty acids that are absolutely necessary for building the structure of brain cells, have an antisclerotic effect, and improve the condition of the skin. EPA and DHA are indispensable materials for building cell membranes. EPA and DHA polyunsaturated fatty acids play an important role already at the very beginning of the development of the human body. Without their participation, there can be no normal development of the retina and brain of the child, therefore it is very important to consume sufficient amounts of DHA and EPA during pregnancy.
Another significant plus for the body of DHA and EPA is that these acids are able to suppress inflammation.
